Yet another sheepish confession....
Vera Berry Burrows in Australia woould like to get in touch with Margaret Berry (now Margaret Barwise). Margaret wrote to me as recently as September 5th (see below) and I'm ashamed to say that, in the few intervening weeks, I've managed to lose her e-mail address.
So... Margaret, if you're reading this please get in touch with me...

Seeking JOAN VICKERS.
Sybil Higham (FGS 1945-1950, now Mrs. S. Somers) has asked us to help find her FGS friend Joan Vickers, who married Derek Matthews. Sybil lost contact with Joan more than 50 years ago. She has recently returned to live in the North of England and would love to have news of her old friend. Can anyone help her?

Calling MARJORIE CRANE.
In June 2007, Marjorie Crane (now Mrs. M. Shepherd) wrote to ask whether anyone could help her to get in touch with her school friend Dorothy Hale. Sadly, Marjorie's appeal hasn't yet borne fruit.
However, another FGS friend from the 1940s has now written asking to be put in touch with Marjorie — but I seem to have lost her e-mail address in one of my frequent computer disasters. So if Marjorie herself, or anyone else who can help, would kindly contact me I'd be very grateful...

Seeking ALAN HINDLEY
Mrs. Margaret Barwise was Margaret Berry at FGS, where she was Head Girl in 1954-55. She is anxious to trace the whereabouts of Alan Hindley, with whom she grew up from primary schooldays. Alan also attended FGS, where they were both in the same class throughout their time there.
Please contact me if you can help Margaret to find her friend.

Does anyone know of a Mrs. VALERIE SANDELLS?
In December 2007 Marion Keating (now Marion France and living in New Zealand) appealed on this website for news of two of her friends from FGS days. One of these ladies, namely Veronica Bailie, turned up in March 2009 (see below) and Marion reports that they are now in regular contact. Marion's other friend, who was Valerie Holmes at school, is still missing.
In Marion's original appeal, Valerie was said to have become Mrs. Jack Wolfendale. However, it now appears that she may have remarried, may now be Mrs. Valerie Sandells, and may be known by that name in the Walkden area.
Please contact me if you can help Marion to find her friend.

Still no news of VERA SPENCER?
Almost exactly one year ago, a group of Old Farnworthians, including May Shackleton/Brooks, Elsie Entwistle/Hodgkiss and Phil Radcliffe, tried to make contact with one-time classmate Vera Spencer, but without success. Their appeal has now been joined by Joan Price, Doreen Haslam, Joyce Leach and Donald Walker. Please contact me if you can help them get in touch with Vera.

VERONICA BAILEY has turned up. Now how about VALERIE HOLMES?
In December 2007, Marion Keating wrote from New Zealand to ask for news of two of her school friends, and it's pleasing to report that Marion is now in contact with Veronica Bailey (now Mrs. V. Broadhurst). Can anyone complete the picture and put Marion in touch with Valerie Holmes, who married Jack Wolfendale and lived in the Walkden/Boothstown area?
Please contact me if you can help.

Seeking former English teacher DAVID A. WOTTON.
Journalist Alan Burrows writes from Australia to ask whether anyone can tell him the present whereabouts of David A. ('Daddy') Wotton, who taught English at FGS in the 1950s and early 1960s. David Wotton had, says Alan, "...a remarkable influence [...] on my life, in as much as he honed my English language skills which have carried me through life." Alan wonders whether David W. is still around, and if so, is he in the Manchester area? Please e-mail me if you can help.
UPDATE: 26 February 2009:
Many thanks to Derek Chadwick, who has written with details of David Wotton's present whereabouts. Alan Burrows in Oz is "...more than chuffed"

Seeking MARGARET A. WATTS and several other people.
Jean Brown (now Jean Beale) is an ex-Farnworthian who attended FGS from 1956 to 1959 after 3 years at Westcliffe High School down south and would now like to re-establish contact with old friends. I can't do better than reproduce her e-mail as-is. Please e-mail me if you can help:
"At Farnworth Maggie Watts took me under her wing and we used to go cycling and Youth Hostelling at the weekends and for vacations. In 1959 my parents moved again (to Harlow New Town) and I wound up doing A levels at Herts and Essex High School, working at the Ministry of Transport as an Executive Officer for 3 years and taking a B.A. (Hons)German at Bedford College, London University in 1967.
I kept in touch with Maggie for a number of years and she and her sister Dee even visited me in London. In 1966 I married and had 2 children and in 1969 we moved to San Mateo, California and our 3rd child was born in 1970. In 1971 my husband was relocated to Manchester, New Hampshire and in 1974 we moved to Florida. In 1977 we moved to Thousand Oaks, California and finally in 1984 we moved to our current home in Mission Viejo, California. We did a lot of sightseeing along the way and I also had several different careers from1972 to 2006 and - you guessed it - I somehow lost touch with Maggie.
Maggie's married name was Margaret Hamilton. She would have attended FGS from 1953 to 1958 (I don't think she went on to the 6th Form).
I also knew Barbara Chaloner very well and she shared an apartment with me for a while in London when I was in College. A 3rd girl I knew well and would be interested in hearing from is Sheelagh Willis.
Other girls in my class who might know of Maggie's, Barbara' and/or Sheelagh's whereabouts and who I would love to hear from are Judith Smethurst and Jean Thompson (I have pictures of a wonderful school trip I went on with them.) I saw mention on www.farnworthgrammar.com from 2002 that Judith was living in Canada and someone was in touch with her.
By the way my sister Anne Brown, who was in the year above me at FGS, got in touch with Lynn Bradburn through Friends Reunited. Lynn lives in Canada but has been visiting with Anne for several years now and she and her husband came to stay at Anne's for a couple of days while I was in England at the end of September this year.
Thank you for your help. Even if you cannot find any of these people I really enjoyed your Website - and did identify myself for sure in the 1957 Panorama Part 4 6th row up 3 1/2 people from the right hand side between Jean Willoughby and Irene Charleston. In the 1959 Panorama Part 1 I am 4th row up on the right and 2 1/2 people from the right between Sheelagh Willis and Doreen McMullen.
Regards,
Jean Beale (maiden name Brown, nickname Fred)."

Seeking information on a K. HALL, who was at FGS in 1925.
A copy of Robert Louis Stevenson's novel 'Kidnapped' was awarded to a pupil named K. Hall as a Second Form prize in 1925. The book has turned up in South Africa and its present owner has kindly offered to pass it along to anyone who is sufficiently interested to pay the postage costs. If you know of any surviving relatives of K. Hall please ask them to contact me and I'll put them in touch with the book's owner .

Any news of PAT BECKETT or MAUREEN YATES?
Freda Bentley attended FGS for just one year (1953) and was then whisked away by her parents when they moved to Blackpool. She became good friends with Vera Berry, Pat Beckett and Maureen Yates during her time in Farnworth, and recently wrote to ask whether this website might possibly help her to contact her old friends.
I'm pleased to report that Freda is now in touch with Vera Berry, who is now Vera Berry Burrows and lives in Australia. Unfortunately however I have no information regarding either Pat Beckett or Maureen Yates, so I'm hoping that someone out there may be able to help. Freda tells me that she, Pat and Vera were all in the same form at FGS. Maureen, on the other hand (who is the same age as Freda, lived a few doors away from her in Kearsley, and had a brother named Jeff) would have been a late starter at FGS, probably in 1955. Freda has also found a Jeff Yates in Group 1 of the 1957 panorama (click here) but can't be sure whether he is Maureen's brother or just a namesake.
Please e-mail me if you can shed any light.

Sad News re HARRY HESKETH
In June 2006 I appealed here on behalf of Geoffrey Barlow for help in tracing Harry Hesketh, who was his friend at FGS during the mid- to late-1930s. Sadly, Harry's daughter Mrs. Anne Williams has written to tell me that Harry passed away on January 5th 2006.

Seeking BERYL COOPER (FGS 1955-60 or 62):
Vera Berry Burrows has written from Australia on behalf of another Old Farnworthian emigrée, namely Freda Jolley. Freda would like to contact Beryl Cooper, who was her best friend at FGS between 1955 and 1960 (or possibly '62). We don't know Beryl's married name but Vera thinks that she may be living in Chesterfield.

Anyone remember Mr. T.P. GASCOIGNE?
A lady named Jean Rawcliffe has e-mailed seeking information about her great-uncle Mr. Thomas Percival Gascoigne (b. 1877, d.1941) who, it is thought, may have been "a Head Science Master at your school, probably in the 1920’s and 1930’s."

Anyone remember DAVID ROSE?
David's wife Suzanne is compiling a This Is Your Life book of memories for his 50th birthday next February and would like to hear from anyone who remembers David or, ideally, could lend a photograph with David on it. David, who left FGS in 1974 or thereabouts, had two older brothers (Dennis and Derek) and a cousin (Brian Rose) who is named on the 1972 panorama. He lived in Hardie Avenue, Farnworth.
Please contact me if you can help.

Anyone remember IRENE SOUTHWARD?
Colin Regan, who was FGS Head Boy in 1975, has written seeking information about his mother, whose maiden name was Irene Southward. Irene, who was born in 1930 (and would presumably have started at FGS in 1941) was suspended from FGS at the age of 14 or thereabouts for eating ice cream in the street and not wearing a hat*. Irene's mother then refused to let her return to the school, and she left. Does anyone remember Irene?
* Those were the days, eh?
