Farnworth Grammar School

Mr. Gibson's archive

Selections from the archive of the late Mr. K.B. Gibson.
Contributed by Mrs. F.J.W. Gibson and Ms. Ruth Gibson

The late Kenneth Burton Gibson was Farnworth Grammar School's last headmaster. He retired when FGS was closed down in August 1982, having served the school for more than 26 years — and having stayed on until the age of 67 in order to see the job through to its sad conclusion. He is said to have been terribly upset about the demise of the school, a reaction that many of us share.

The pages that follow present a wide selection from Mr. Gibson's archive. They include:

  • an almost complete set of Speech Day programmes covering the years 1946 to 1979, plus a couple of interesting curios in the shape of a Speech Day programme from December 1919 and the Farnworth Journal's report on the school's 1923 prizegiving.

  • An as yet undetermined number of excerpts from an almost complete set of Lumens covering Mr. Gibson's years in office (1956 - 1982). Restrictions on space and time don't allow me to add every page to the website but I'll do my best to include all the editorials and the most interesting bits of the remainder.

  • Miscellaneous other documents yet to be catalogued.
