- FGS 1953 – 1960
- 1960 –63: St Katharine’s College, Scarisbrick Hall. Main subjects PE and Needlework although I can admit now that I never intended to teach anything other than PE! In hindsight, thank goodness I did A level Literature at FGS. It became important to me later and the needlework was useful to family members and friends who needed bridesmaids’ dresses without extortionate costs!
- 1963 – 65: I taught PE at Harper Green Secondary School. It was very good training and excellent grounding for my future career. My friend and mentor at that time was Jean Wilson (née Barwise) who was teaching Science. Jean had been a prefect and Games Captain at FGS when I started there in 1953.
- 1965 – 66: I "emigrated" to Vancouver, Canada, but misguidedly returned to the UK to marry my first husband!
- 1966 – 94: Taught in the Catholic sector in Bolton surviving two amalgamations and split-site teaching. Completed a Library course at Edge Hill College, Ormskirk and a degree course with the Open University between 1974 and 1977. Transferred from the PE Department to the English Department and taught English until I took early retirement in 1994.
- 1994 – 97: Ran the library at Mount St Joseph School part-time until “real” retirement beckoned.
- 1998 – 99: Was tempted by the private sector to come out of retirement. I wish I’d had the confidence in my early career to apply for posts in independent schools. What a pleasure to teach in that environment!
- On a personal level, I have a son, Andrew, from my first marriage and two grandsons whom I love dearly. My life has had lots of ups and downs, but I am now living in Queensland, Australia with fellow Old Farnworthian, Alan Burrows. Our details are already recorded on this site for posterity! Our story in itself is one worth writing, but would take up far too much space on the site and anyway, we may want to go to print with it eventually! I’m in the process of trying to get my first novel published and novel number two is already on the way!
