Personal Profile

Ray Smith

  • Educated at Farnworth Grammar School 1945/50.
  • Commenced working life in Banking, with intermission for 2 years National Service.
  • Emigrated to New Zealand in 1956 and continued banking career.
  • Married in 1957 to Patricia, a Walkden girl.
  • In 1960 commenced employment with one of the largest companies in New Zealand at that time. Was employed in the operation of the second “Computer” to come to NZ. It was an ICT 555 Calculator / Tabulator with ancillary equipment, (punched cards and all that). Later equipment consisted of an ICL 1202 Computer and then an ICL 1301 Computer. This was one of the first computers to use magnetic tape as a storage device. We were ecstatic when we increased the memory size from 8k to 16k !
  • My next move was to the first NZ private Computer Bureau to be independent of computer manufacturers or vendors. I was the Bureau's Systems Representative and Assistant Manager, and later I became their Local Government Specialist.
  • Then I was appointed Deputy Town Clerk for a Borough Council and remained in this position until the Borough/County amalgamation. With my background in computing I was appointed IT Manager for the District Council.
  • Now in retirement, Pat and I live in a small town in the south-east of the North Island of New Zealand, where I enjoy just being the newshound, writer, typist and editor of our Retirement Village Newsletter...
  • ... and in order to combat Parkinsonism I am re-learning to play the classical piano after a 52-year gap.
