- I went on from school to Sheffield University to read English, then into
National Service, during which I was trained as a Russian interpreter at
Cambridge University.
- My career has been in journalism (Bolton
Evening News, Daily Mail), broadcasting (BBC TV) and Higher
Education (The University of Manchester - as Director of
Communications).
- I have also had a 30-year link with The
Pennsylvania State University in the USA, where I am Adjunct
Professor of Communications - and they kindly last year made me an
Honorary Alumnus of Penn State and bestowed upon me Life
Membership of their Alumni Association.*
- I have been made a Life Member of the National Union of Journalists.
- I still run a course at Man U for Penn State media students - and I still review music and
theatre for the Manchester Evening News.
- I had the honour of presenting the prizes at Speech Day in the Victoria Hall, Bolton, in 1969** (I think Margaret Rothwell was Chair of the Governors).
- Also, I made a BBC TV Omnibus programme about Jack Rosenthal, the TV playwright. Jack was my best pal at University, with Ron Bullough and Derek Matthews, who were the year above me at school, but took me and Jack into their digs in Sheffield. Ron became a top scientist - Professor Ron Bullough, FRS, CBE.

The Pennsylvania State University has just awarded for the first time the Philip Radcliffe International Scholarship for Study Abroad. The funds for this award have come from voluntary donations from former students of the course that Phil ran for 35 years at The University of Manchester, which brought Penn State students to Manchester for one semester each year. The first award has enabled a young woman named Natalie Olinger to go to Australia. [LD]
