- My name was Marlene Eglon (now Houghton). I was at FGS from 1949 to 54.
- After school I did part-time study at Bolton Tech. and worked at Bleachers' Association in the Research Department in Bromley Cross. I then went to Portsmouth Training College in 1960 and trained to be a science teacher. I married and then taught in Winchester and Nottinghamshire before moving to British Columbia, Canada. Whilst there I introduced Physics teaching to a very prestigious private school in Vancouver. I adopted an aboriginal baby boy and later taught briefly in an Elementary school on the outskirts of Vancouver.
- I had a daughter and lived for a year in Western Australia where I taught in a Secondary School. In the UK I had been teaching in Bucks and was very active in the Association of Science Education (ASE). I left my husband and moved to Uxbridge near my sister (Jean Eglon, 4 years below me at FGS).
Fast forward...
- I taught Physics and Chemistry at Greenway School (later known as Uxbridge High School) for 17 years and was Head of Sixth Form when I took early retirement in 1995. I then worked part-time at a Special Needs Secondary school, teaching Maths and Science, until 2001.
- I travel extensively, helped in part by my daughter who is cabin crew for British Airways. My love of languages has supplemented the French and German learned at FGS with Spanish, Russian, some Italian and beginnings of Mandarin. I was in the Music Club at FGS and used to go to concerts with the Halle Orchestra at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester. I have sung with 2 Opera companies in the local area here (one performing at Eton College) and am now the Secretary of an International Opera Group. I edit and publish their Newsletter. I am still singing.
- I am affiliated with the National Theatre, the Barbican, Royal Opera House and the South Bank Centre so spend a lot of time at events in town. I just had a "blip" when I was diagnosed with breast cancer late in 2006 and am just completing treatment, so events have been curtailed somewhat.
My siblings are:
- Roy Eglon - 2 years ahead of me at FGS. Was Superintendent in Lancashire Constabulary and now lives in Spain.
- Jean Eglon (now Jean George) was 4 years below me at FGS. Retired Junior School music teacher living in Bucks. She is on the extreme left of Group 1 in the 1953 panorama, next to Annie Berry.
