- Started at FGS September 1948 in III alpha, our form-room was in the basement near to the woodwork-room, and our form mistress was Miss O'Donnell (maths). Headmaster at that time was Mr. A. Wilson. Went into Lower IVb and through to Upper Vb, took GCE ‘O’-levels then spent (or mis-spent) one year in Lower VIth (Science). Left in 1954.

1954 to 1956 - worked as a Lab Junior at a chemical works in Whitefield and did ONC chemistry part-time at Stretford Tech.

1956 to 1958 – Full-time chemistry student at R.C.A.T. Salford (now Salford University)

1958 to 1960 - worked in research labs at Chloride Batteries Ltd. in the early days of Fuel Cells.

1960 to 1962 – National Service in the R.A.F., trained as Wireless Technician at Yatesbury, Wiltshire, then in 1961 posted to Sealand, near Chester. Managed to get day-release to do HNC (chemistry) at Flintshire Tech.

1962 to 1966 - worked at Salford University as an Experimental Officer.

1966 to 1971 – sales engineer with Perkin-Elmer Ltd. (scientific instruments) covering North-West England.

1971 to 1993 – Lab Superintendent at Manchester Poly (now M/C Metropolitan University). Took early retirement in 1993 and now spend my time playing crown green bowls, I play for three teams, one of which is in the Farnworth & District Veteran’s League, so I’ve still got some connection with Farnworth!

I married Dorothy in December 1962;, we have a son, David, living near Southampton, and a daughter, Kath, who lives in Hazel Grove (Stockport). They are both married and we now have five grandsons.
- Sadly my wife, Dorothy, died in December 2008 after a short illness.
