STOP PRESS, OCTOBER 9th 2002:
Ron Hodson, an FGS contemporary of Fred's, has written with the sad news that Fred died a few weeks ago.

After 2 years National Service in the RAF and 3 years
at
Nottingham University I joined ICI where I did research in the fields of
colloid and
polymer science until I retired in 1989.

I married in 1956 and we have two children and a grandson. Sadly my wife
died
this year [2001:Ed.] after a long debilitating illness.

As to hobbies - I am one of those fortunate or unfortunate creatures to whom
work was more a hobby than work.

When I retired we moved to a tiny village on the border between Berkshire and
Wiltshire.
