THE MAYOR 1999/2000
- Councillor William Bemard Pennington was born in Walkden where he still lives with his wife Jean of 43 years.
They have two children namely Julie who is a teacher and Catherine who is a nurse and four grandchildren, Carlie Leanne, Matthew Joseph, Nathan Pennington and Alexandra Alice.
- Councillor Pennington was educated at St. Paul's Walkden Junior School, Farnworth Grammar School and Manchester University where he graduated with a Bsc. (Physics) in 1955. He was awarded an Honorary M.A. in 1996 by Salford University. He became a teacher in 1955 at Hayward Bi-Lateral School in Bolton and then Bolton County Grammar School, retiring in 1988 from Urmston Grammar School for Girls. He now runs his own business: Penland Garden Maintenance.
- Councillor Pennington is a Labour Councillor who was initially elected to Worsley Urban District Council in 1962 where he became the Chairman of the Housing and Joint Redevelopment Committee in 1964, Leader of the Council in 1969 and Chairman in 1969. He was elected to Greater Manchester Council and Salford Council in 1973. He was Chairman of Salford Metropolitan District Council in 1973 and was Deputy Chairman of the Finance Committee for ten years before being elected Chairman from 1986 until 1998.
- Councillor Pennington is President of Walkden Band, MENCAP, Worsley Horticultural Society and Parr Fold Park Tennis Club. He is Treasurer to Walkden Congregational Church, Salford Co-op Party, Worsley Constituency LabourParty, Emlyn Hall and Walkden North Labour Party. He is Chairman to the Walkden and District Tennis League, Walkden and District Scouts, Eccles 6th Form College Board, Walkden North County Primary School Governors, James Brindley County Primary School Governors and Worsley Citizens Advice Bureau. Councillor Pennington sits on the Council and Court of Manchester and Salford Universities.
- Councillor Pennington leads a very active social life and has played tennis for Parr Fold Park Tennis Club since 1946. He is a member of Ellesmere Golf Club and enjoys skiing, playing squash, camping and walking. He is an avid reader, a conscientious dog owner and photographer.
- During his year of office the Mayor will raise money for Children's Cancer Research at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital.
Bernard has since been appointed a Non-Executive Director of the Salford Royal Hospital Trust (Hope Hospital), where he chairs the performance sub-committee and acts as complaints convenor. He describes this as "...a very interesting change of direction."
