Personal Profile

Alan Potts

  • Started at Birmingham University studying Chemistry in 1955.
  • Since graduating with an Honours Degree in Chemistry from Birmingham University in 1958 I have lived in Mid-Cheshire, first in Northwich and now for many years in Goostrey.
  • I started teaching Chemistry in September 1958 at Sir John Deane’s Grammar School, Northwich. Cheshire.
  • In 1959 I married Stella Rushton whom I had met at FGS in 1955, Stella left FGS in 1955.
  • Sir John Deane’s Grammar school was a mixed traditional Grammar School when I started and then provided new challenges / opportunities over the years as it changed to a Boy’s Grammar and then one of the first Sixth Form Colleges in the country.
  • In 1970/71 I spent a year at University College London on a Shell Fellowship.
  • By 1989 having been Head of Science for some years and successfully negotiated the Educational changes, I was ready to leave and was asked to join the County Science Advisory Team. I enjoyed 3 years involving many aspects of science education including curriculum development with colleagues in Suffolk and a National Publisher.
  • In 1990 I got the opportunity to ‘escape’ taking very early retirement. However, on retirement in 1991 a government fellowship took me to Australia for 3 months, and I then worked part-time for the Publisher.
  • My colleague who retired at the same time as me started a company to tender for Ofsted inspections, whilst refusing to become an inspector, I did agree to become the part-time, self- employed administrator for the company . This became quite a successful company gradually involving more time and more work with a local office and increasing computer demands.
  • By 2003 I really had had my fill of education and did retire. It is now a life of gardening, holidays and the family and the computer.
  • We have two daughters who live quite near and 3 grandchildren.
  • I would very much like to get in touch with those who were with me at FGS and who may or may not appear on the photographs.
